How Tall Do You Have to Be to Model in Nigeria? Runway vs Commercial Height Requirements
If you are wondering how tall do you have to be to model, the answer depends heavily on the type of modelling you want to do. Height can be a strict requirement for some runway jobs in Nigeria, while commercial, beauty, lifestyle and other modelling categories can work very differently.
So if somebody has ever told you:
“You are too short to model.”
the first question should be:
Too short for what type of modelling?
That distinction matters.
You can be too short for one runway brief and still be completely suitable for another type of modelling job.
How Tall Do You Have to Be to Model?
There is no universal height requirement that applies to every model, agency, brand and casting.
For traditional runway and high-fashion modelling, height remains important because designers often work with pre-made sample garments and want a relatively consistent visual proportion across the runway.
Commercial modelling is usually broader.
A bank campaign, skincare advertisement, telecom commercial, supermarket campaign or lifestyle shoot may care more about whether you look right for the customer being portrayed, photograph well, move naturally and deliver the required performance.
01 Real Model Height Requirements in Nigeria Are Not All the Same
Current Nigerian agency and casting requirements demonstrate exactly why there is no single number.
| Agency / Casting | Female Height | Male Height | Important Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mahogany Model Management | Minimum 5’9″ / 176 cm | Minimum 6’1″ / 185.5 cm | Current agency new-face requirements |
| Box Models Agency | Minimum 5’9″ / 175 cm | Minimum 5’11” / 180 cm | Agency application requirements published through Elite Studio Nigeria |
| Future Face Global Lagos 2026 | 5’8″–6’0″ | 6’1″–6’4″ | Requirements for that specific 2026 casting |
| GTCO Fashion Weekend 2026 | Minimum 5’9″ | Not applicable to the published female casting | Specific 2026 runway casting requirement |
| Entertainment Week Africa 2026 | No public minimum stated on current application | No public minimum stated on current application | The current form asks applicants to submit their height |
Look closely at that table.
The requirements change.
That is the point.
Even within fashion modelling, one agency may accept a female model at 5’8″ while another may establish 5’9″ as its minimum.
A casting can also create its own requirement regardless of what an agency normally accepts.
02 Why Do Runway Models Usually Need to Be Tall?
Runway clothing is generally created before the final models are selected.
Designers may produce garments around particular sample measurements and proportions.
When models arrive for casting and fitting, the production is usually trying to find people who fit the existing clothes rather than redesigning every garment around each model.
Height can also help create visual consistency when several models walk the same collection.
That is why runway briefs commonly specify:
- Minimum height
- Bust or chest
- Waist
- Hips
- Shoe size
- Clothing size
Height is therefore not simply an aesthetic obsession.
For many runway productions, it is partly a garment and production requirement.
Read our separate guide to runway modelling if fashion shows are your main goal.
03 How Tall Do Female Models Need to Be in Nigeria?
For traditional fashion and runway opportunities, many Nigerian agencies and major castings currently work around the upper-5-foot range.
For example, current published requirements include:
- 5’9″ minimum at Mahogany Model Management
- 5’9″ minimum at Box Models Agency
- 5’8″–6’0″ for the 2026 Future Face Global Lagos casting
- 5’9″ minimum for the 2026 GTCO Fashion Weekend female casting
But those examples should not be converted into a fake rule saying:
“All Nigerian female models must be 5’9″.”
They do not.
They show what certain fashion-focused opportunities require.
04 How Tall Do Male Models Need to Be in Nigeria?
Male high-fashion and runway requirements are often taller.
Current examples include:
- 6’1″ minimum at Mahogany Model Management
- 5’11” minimum at Box Models Agency
- 6’1″–6’4″ for the 2026 Future Face Global Lagos casting
Again, the difference between those requirements proves the larger point.
There is no national rule declaring that every Nigerian male model must be exactly one height.
The requirement depends on the market and the specific opportunity.
05 Can You Model If You Are 5’5″?
Potentially, yes.
But you need to be realistic about the category.
If a runway casting clearly says:
Female models: minimum 5’9″
and you are 5’5″, that particular casting is not designed for you.
That does not mean:
“You cannot model.”
It means:
“You do not meet this particular brief.”
Those are completely different statements.
Someone who does not meet traditional runway height requirements may explore other areas where height is not the central filter.
06 What About 5’6″, 5’7″ or 5’8″?
The same principle applies.
Do not judge your entire modelling potential using one centimetre or one casting flyer.
At 5’8″, for example, you may meet the requirement for one fashion casting and miss another that specifies 5’9″.
At 5’6″ or 5’7″, some traditional runway and international fashion boards may be difficult to enter.
But your next question should be:
What other modelling markets could realistically use me?
That is a much more useful career question.
07 Commercial Modelling Can Be Much More Flexible
Commercial modelling exists to help brands communicate with customers.
Those customers are not all 5’9″.
Commercial campaigns may need:
- Students
- Young professionals
- Parents
- Families
- Business people
- Everyday consumers
- Fitness talent
- Beauty models
- Creators
- Older adults
- Different body types
That changes the casting logic.
A commercial client may care about:
- How relatable you look
- Your face
- Your smile
- Your expression
- Camera confidence
- Movement
- Personality
- Ability to act naturally
- How well you fit the target customer
Height may still matter for a particular commercial brief.
It simply does not need to dominate every commercial modelling decision.
Runway Model vs Commercial Model: Why the Height Rules Differ
| Runway / Fashion | Commercial |
|---|---|
| Often works with pre-made sample garments | Often casts around a customer or campaign concept |
| Height may be a strong filter | Height may be flexible depending on the job |
| Measurements can be tightly specified | Body type may vary widely |
| Runway walk is important | Natural movement and expression may matter more |
| Fashion-market standards influence selection | Brand relatability can influence selection |
What About Beauty Modelling?
Beauty campaigns often focus more heavily on the face, skin, hair, hands, expression or product interaction.
A close-up skincare photograph does not automatically require the same height as a runway casting.
That does not mean every beauty brief accepts everybody.
Clients may still request particular:
- Skin characteristics
- Hair
- Age range
- Face shape
- Features
- Hands or nails
- Expression
The point is simply that the selection criteria are different.
What About Lifestyle and Advertising Models?
Lifestyle advertising is another area where the person may matter more than traditional runway proportions.
A telecom brand may need someone who looks like a Nigerian university student.
A bank may need a believable young professional.
A food brand may need a family.
A healthcare campaign may need a mother and child.
An e-commerce company may need people who fit its actual product size range.
Those briefs can have completely different requirements from Lagos Fashion Week.
This is why models should understand where modelling jobs in Nigeria actually come from.
Does Curve or Plus-Size Modelling Have Height Requirements?
Sometimes.
Being a curve or plus-size model does not automatically remove every fashion-industry height requirement.
A fashion agency may still maintain height and measurement standards for its curve board.
A commercial client hiring a plus-size model may be much more flexible.
Again, the specific market matters.
Read our guide to curve and plus-size modelling in Nigeria.
What About Child Models?
Adult runway height standards obviously should not be applied to children.
Children grow at different rates, and child-model casting generally focuses on the age, clothing size, appearance, personality and needs of the particular campaign.
A children’s clothing company is not looking for a nine-year-old who meets adult runway measurements.
This is another reason why saying:
“Models have to be 5’9″.”
is simply too broad to be useful.
Can Short Men Model?
Yes, but once again the market matters.
A man below the minimum for a traditional high-fashion board may find that runway opportunities are more limited.
That does not automatically exclude him from:
- Commercial advertising
- Lifestyle campaigns
- Beauty and grooming
- Product campaigns
- Social content
- Fitness work
- Character-based advertising
Do not pretend a height requirement does not exist when it does.
But do not allow one requirement to define the entire industry either.
Why Do Agencies Have Different Height Requirements?
Different agencies serve different markets.
An agency focused heavily on international high fashion may scout according to the expectations of partner agencies and designers abroad.
Another agency may have stronger commercial, event, advertising or local-brand work.
Their rosters therefore do not need to look identical.
An agency’s application requirement tells you something about the market that agency is trying to serve.
It is not a law governing every model in Nigeria.
A Casting Brief Can Be Stricter Than Your Agency
Being accepted by an agency does not mean you qualify for every job the agency receives.
Imagine an agency represents a female model who is 5’8″.
A designer then sends a brief saying:
Female models: 5’9″ and above.
The agency should not submit the 5’8″ model and hope the client ignores the brief.
The model simply does not fit that particular opportunity.
Another campaign may arrive the following week where her height is completely acceptable.
Professional modelling involves matching the right person to the right job.
Do Not Lie About Your Height
Adding two inches to your height on an application does not make you taller.
It only creates a problem later.
Agencies, casting teams, designers and stylists may check measurements during:
- Agency assessments
- Castings
- Fittings
- Wardrobe preparation
- Production
If a casting requires 5’9″ and you are 5’7″, claiming 5’9″ will not change what happens when you arrive.
Accurate information makes you easier to work with.
How Should You Measure Your Height for a Model Application?
Measure without shoes.
Stand straight with your back against a flat wall.
Keep your feet flat on the floor.
Look straight ahead.
Place a flat object level across the top of your head and mark the wall.
Measure from the floor to the mark.
Do not measure yourself in heels and submit that as your height.
If an application requests centimetres, convert the measurement accurately rather than guessing.
If You Are Below Traditional Runway Height, What Should You Do?
First, stop applying blindly to castings you clearly do not meet.
Instead:
- Understand your likely modelling categories.
- Get accurate measurements.
- Take clean current polaroids.
- Develop your posing and movement.
- Learn commercial performance if commercial work suits you.
- Research agencies and castings whose requirements actually fit you.
- Build around your strengths rather than pretending your limitations do not exist.

Being Tall Does Not Automatically Make You a Good Model
Height can get you through the first filter for a runway casting.
That is not the same as getting booked.
A model can be 5’11” and still have:
- A weak runway walk
- Poor posture
- Little body control
- Weak photographs
- Poor grooming
- Difficulty taking direction
- Bad professional habits
Meanwhile, somebody who meets the requirements and is properly developed may perform much better.
Height is one part of the assessment.
It is not the career.
Being Shorter Does Not Automatically Make You a Commercial Model Either
This is also important.
Do not read this article and conclude:
“I’m short, therefore I am automatically a commercial model.”
Commercial models still need to perform.
Clients may look for:
- Natural expression
- Personality
- Camera confidence
- Ability to take direction
- Product interaction
- Dialogue
- Movement
- Professionalism
Every category has standards.
They are simply not always the same standards.
DXC VIEW
One of the quickest ways aspiring models discourage themselves is by taking one runway requirement and applying it to the entire modelling industry.
Height matters.
We are not going to lie about that.
For certain fashion markets, it matters a lot.
But professional modelling is bigger than one runway.
The better question is not:
“Am I tall enough to be a model?”
It is:
“What modelling market could realistically use someone like me?”
Once you know that, you can stop chasing the wrong opportunities and start developing for the right ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
How tall do you have to be to model in Nigeria?
There is no single height requirement for every type of modelling in Nigeria. Traditional runway and high-fashion agencies often have minimum height requirements, while commercial, lifestyle, beauty, kids and other modelling categories can use different criteria.
Can I model if I am 5’5″?
Potentially, yes. You may not qualify for many traditional runway castings that specify taller minimum heights, but other modelling categories may have more flexible requirements.
Can a 5’7″ girl become a model?
Yes, depending on the modelling category and individual opportunity. Some fashion agencies and runway castings may require 5’8″ or 5’9″ and above, while commercial and other markets may be more flexible.
Is 5’8″ tall enough for a female model?
It can be for some opportunities. For example, some fashion castings accept female models from 5’8″, while others set 5’9″ as their minimum. Always check the actual requirement.
Is 5’9″ a good height for a female model?
5’9″ meets the published minimum for several Nigerian fashion agencies and major runway castings, but height alone does not guarantee representation or bookings.
How tall does a male runway model need to be?
Current Nigerian examples vary. Some agencies start around 5’11” while others publish 6’1″ as their minimum. Individual runway castings may set their own requirements.
Do commercial models need to be tall?
Not always. Commercial casting may prioritise relatability, performance, expression, personality and fit for the target customer. However, individual commercial jobs can still specify height or measurements where those details matter.
Can short models walk runway?
Some runway productions use broader height ranges, but many traditional fashion shows establish minimum heights. If a casting specifies a minimum you do not meet, respect the brief and look for opportunities better suited to you.
Does height matter for beauty modelling?
It may matter for some jobs, but beauty work often focuses more heavily on the face, skin, hair, hands, expression or product being advertised than traditional full-body runway proportions.
Should I lie about my height on a model application?
No. Agencies and production teams can verify your measurements later. Accurate information is part of professional presentation.
Not Sure What Type of Modeling Fits You?
You do not have to guess your way into the industry.
DXC Models works with aspiring talent in Lagos to help them understand their potential, develop professionally and prepare for suitable modelling opportunities.
Your height may influence your market.
It does not tell your entire story.
Important: Agency and casting requirements change. The Nigerian examples referenced in this article reflect publicly available requirements checked in October 2026. Always verify the current brief or agency application before submitting.
